French Cargo Ship Hit in Strait of Hormuz
"The CMA CGM San Antonio, was targeted in an attack yesterday while it was sailing in the Strait of Hormuz," the company said in a statement, adding that several crew members were injured and evacuated for medical treatment.
The official confirmation followed a period of uncertainty during which maritime security agencies and media outlets had separately reported that a cargo vessel had been struck by a projectile in the area, though no formal identification of the ship had been made public. French authorities had earlier stated they were unable to immediately verify accounts that a CMA CGM-operated vessel had come under attack in the strait. American and British media had previously reported that a French cargo ship may have been hit by gunfire in the strategic chokepoint.
The incident unfolds against a backdrop of sharply elevated regional tensions that have gripped the waterway since the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran on February 28 — triggering retaliatory action from Tehran against Israel and US allies across the Gulf, and ultimately leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation entered into force on April 8, but subsequent negotiations held in Islamabad failed to yield a durable settlement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce without stipulating a fixed expiration date.
Since April 13, the United States has maintained an active naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic through the strait.
